Highmark Health names next CEO

The board of directors of Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health recently promoted President Karen Hanlon to CEO and president, effective Jan. 1. She becomes the organization’s first female CEO.

Hanlon joined the company in 1997 and has held a series of leadership roles in finance. She became chief financial officer in 2014, chief operating officer in 2018 and president in 2025. Her experience includes increasing the company’s revenue from approximately $17 billion in 2014 to a projected nearly $35 billion in December 2026.

In her new role, Hanlon will be responsible for strategy, operations, growth and performance of Highmark Health’s health plans, Allegheny Health Network (AHN), and diversified businesses.

“As healthcare continues to evolve, our focus remains clear: making healthcare more affordable, simpler, and more effective for the people and communities we serve,” Hanlon said. “I am honored by the board’s confidence and grateful for the opportunity to lead this remarkable organization. Together, we will continue advancing our Living Health strategy, delivering remarkable health experiences, and transforming healthcare for future generations.”

Hanlon will succeed CEO David Holmberg who will transition to the role of executive chairman after 12 years as CEO. In his new role, Holmberg will help Hanlon and the board of directors advance Highmark Health’s long-term strategic priorities.
