Alcoa names new executive vice president and chief operations officer

Alcoa Corp. recently appointed Matt Reed as executive vice president and chief operations officer, effective Jan. 1.

Reed joined Alcoa in June 2023 and served concurrently as vice president of operations for Australia and as president of Alcoa of Australia. He will continue in this role until Jan. 31 when an interim vice president operations for Australia will be appointed.

In his new role, Reed will lead Alcoa’s global operations and will be responsible for cost management, environmental management, focusing on safety, operational excellence, productivity, and long-term strategic planning.

“Matt is a very strong leader who will help us drive a high-performance culture across our assets,” Alcoa President and CEO William F. Oplinger said. “He is guided by integrity and a passion for building capable and motivated teams. He will build on the work he’s already accomplished, driving increased stability while successfully managing a range of complex initiatives.”

Reed replaces Oplinger.

Prior to joining Alcoa, Reed work for OZ Minerals, serving as operations executive (chief operating officer) and leading assets and projects in Australia and Brazil. He also worked for SIMEC Mining, serving as executive managing director (chief operating officer) where he was in charge of commodity exploration, development, operations, business development and marketing for multiple sites.
