Cranberry Township, Pa.-based Westinghouse announced its microreactor, eVinci, has been selected by the U.S. Army for use in the next phase of its Janus Program.
The Janus Program is part of the Army’s next-generation nuclear power initiative and is supported by the U.S. Department of War Innovation Unity to accelerate advanced microreactor technologies. The Army’s selection of eVinci is a key milestone in accelerating the use of advanced energy solutions for defense missions, Westinghouse officials said.
“Reliable energy is fundamental to mission assurance, operational readiness and national security,” Rich Rademacher, president of Westinghouse Government Services, said. “The selection of the eVinci microreactor for the Janus Project highlights the important role advanced nuclear technology can play in providing resilient, long-duration power to the warfighter. Westinghouse is proud to support the Army’s efforts to strengthen energy security and deliver innovative capabilities.”
As part of Janus, selected vendors are paired with one of the nine military installations under consideration for microreactor technologies.
“The Janus Program is about transitioning from designs and experiments to reliable commercial hardware which secures our energy independence,” Dr. Jeff Waksman, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, said. “The Janus Program vendors were selected through a deeply rigorous evaluation on technical, financial, and organizational capabilities conducted by an All-Star panel of dozens of experts from across the nation. We look forward to working alongside each team as they proceed toward successfully completing the rigorous technical milestones we’ve agreed upon.”
The eVinvi microreactor delivers flexible and resilient energy for defense applications. The heat-pipe reactor is designed to provide electricity 24/7 for eight years without refueling, officials said.
