Pittsburgh-based Wabtec Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp. recently announced a program to modernize 33 of the railroad’s DC-traction Evolution Series locomotives. The program, which is underway, is part of Norfolk Southern’s fleet modernization strategy and will convert the units to AC-traction technology to improve performance, reliability and efficiency.

The ES44DC locomotives launched in 2004. Wabtec and Norfolk Southern have been collaborating on locomotive modernization efforts since 2015, and the recently announced program expands the companies’ partnership. Over the past decade, the partners modernized more than 1,000 DC-to-AC locomotive conversions.
Under the new program, Wabtec will modernize the ES44DC locomotives with AC traction motors, upgraded control systems, and advanced digital technologies, and will convert the units into ES44ACMs. The package also includes enhanced locomotive diagnostics and maintenance planning.
Work is being performed at Wabtec’s U.S.-based facilities. The first upgraded locomotive was delivered this month with deliveries continuing through 2027.
