The Heinz Endowments recently named John Barker as its next chief investment officer.

The Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organization is the second largest foundation in Pittsburgh and one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the United States. It invests in arts and culture, civic participation, climate, community and economic development, environment and health, food systems, veterans and work force development.

“We are delighted to welcome John back to his hometown and to our team,” Chris DeCardy, Heinz Endowments president, said. “His proven record of success in investment management combined with his commitment to the communities he has served and to partnerships for greater impact will be a wonderful asset for our foundation and the region.”

Barker has nearly 25 years of experience as a financial manager with nonprofit organizations. He has spent nearly 20 years at The Kresge Foundation in Michigan where he most recently served as vice president and chief investment officer. Prior experience includes Notre Dame assistant investment director.

Barker also served as Foundation for Detroit’s Future treasurer and Children’s Foundation of Michigan board of directors and investment committee member.

In his new role, Barker will be responsible for the endowment’s investment management and will lead investment adviser and investment committee relations.
