Virginia-based Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA), an advanced land defense systems and modern shipbuilding programs company, recently purchased a controlling stake in Hanwha Philly Shipyard.
Hanwha acquired the shipyard in December 2024 with Hanwha Systems holding a 60 percent stake and Hanwha Ocean holding the remainder. Earlier this year, HDUSA established a presence at the shipyard as part of the transition into a dual-use yard building for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Hanwha Systems announced in September it planned to sell its stake to Hanwha Defense USA Shipbuilding LLC, an HDUSA-led joint venture with Hanwha FutureProof.
HDUSA has been expanding its U.S. footprint through selective business acquisitions, organic growth, and strategic industrial partnerships. Holding the majority stake, strengthens HDUSA’s presence in the U.S. shipbuilding and defense market.
HDUSA President of U.S. Shipbuilding RADM Tom Anderson (Ret. U.S. Navy) will oversee all shipbuilding operations in the U.S.
“Over the past two years Hanwha has made significant investments in the Philly Shipyard to contribute to the revitalization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry,” Tom Anderson, shipbuilding president of HDUSA U.S., said. “Now we are positioning the shipyard to transition to dual-use, aligning shipyard operations, workforce, and customer relations in preparation to build for the U.S. Navy, other federal agencies, and commercial customers.”
Hanwha Defense USA is a subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace.
