Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) Deputy Secretary for Compensation and Insurance Scott G. Weiant announced Thursday that Phoenix Sintered Metals LLC in Brockway had been awarded the Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence.
The award, which honors employers who have achieved the highest standards of workplace safety, highlighted the company’s commitment to workplace safety.
“One of the many ways Phoenix Sintered Metals LLC works to promote best safety practices is by providing employees with daily access to updated safety topics, rules and regulations,” Weiant said. “Some of the company’s proactive safety measures, including adding a safety communications kiosk in the employee breakroom, highlight the company’s ongoing commitment to promoting an injury-free workplace.”
All Pennsylvania employers are eligible for the award, which is based on information and criteria involving workplace injuries/illnesses versus industry standards, as well as innovation and strategic development of safety policy and approaches.

Phoenix Sintered Metals produces high-strength powder metal parts for a number of industries. Some of its safety practices includes a problem-solving sheet using the “Five Whys” technique to help employees investigate near misses, accidents and/or injuries, which allows employees to proactively identify the cause-and-effect relationships that lead to solutions for potential safety hazards. All company employees also participate in weekly safety inspections where they take turns performing safety checks.
The company is the only powdered metal company in the state that has been accepted into OSHA’s Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program.
