Highmark Health plans to invest $20 million in upgrades to its headquarters in downtown Pittsburgh over three years.
The project is expected to create more than 100 construction jobs.
In addition to being Highmark Health’s headquarters, the 31-story building has 16 tenants with a 72 percent occupancy rate for retail and a 100 percent occupancy rate for office space.
Upgrades to the building, which was constructed in 1988, include enhancing retail and dining in the public-facing lobby areas on the first two floors.
“Highmark invested in downtown Pittsburgh at a time when the region was losing companies and jobs,” Karen Hanlon, Highmark Health COO, said. “Today, it’s a much different story. More than 15,000 people call downtown Pittsburgh home, and more than 110,000 people work downtown.”
Highmark Health is the second-largest integrated health care delivery and financing network in the United States.
It directly and indirectly supports more than 64,000 jobs in the Pittsburgh region. In 2018, Highmark Health generated more than $420 million in local tax revenue and $9.3 billion to the local economy.
It is the parent company of Allegheny Health Network, Highmark, and HM Health Solutions. Highmark and its subsidiaries and affiliates insure 4.5 million people in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
