GSK, a U.K.-based biopharma company with its U.S. headquarters in Philadelphia, recently announced it will invest more than $800 million to expand its Montgomery County operations.
The company will demolish existing buildings and replace them with a commercial-scale biologics manufacturing facility, a co-located research and development pilot plant, and a centralized quality control lab and manufacturing science and technology hub. The new buildings will allow the integration of commercial production, research and development, and advanced digital capabilities on one site.
“Investing in additional commercial and R&D manufacturing with advanced digital capabilities at our Upper Merion site will help accelerate the development and supply of future medicines for patients,” Regis Simard, GSK global supply chain president, said. “The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been an important partner in supporting GSK’s growth, innovation, and manufacturing footprint in the United States. By expanding in Upper Merion, we’re building on that longstanding partnership while creating high-quality jobs and strengthening our ability to deliver the next generation of medicines.”
Construction is scheduled to begin next year. The project is expected to create more than 300 jobs over the next five years.
The company invested $800 million in 2024 to expand its Lancaster County operations. The project doubled the site’s size and capacity.
