The National Science Foundation recently awarded Penn State University a $20 million grant for the development of new semiconductor and quantum materials.
Funding will be used to establish a new facility, the Layered and Thin Film Technologies with Intelligent Cloud Experimentation Programmable Cloud Laboratory, that will merge physical automated research tools with artificial intelligence to strengthen domestic technology manufacturing and the work force.
“This investment is an encouraging sign that the federal government remains committed to sustained investments in America’s research universities, whose work is essential to preparing our nation for the challenges ahead,” Andrew Read, Penn State senior vice president for research, said.
The laboratory will focus on three aspects. Using AI and cloud technologies, it will advance the materials needed for computing, sensing, and quantum technologies. It will expand access for scientists and students to research infrastructure, government laboratories and industry nationwide. It will provide hands-on and remote work force training in semiconductor manufacturing, AI-driven research, and advanced science.
