U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) recently co-introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would encourage long-term private investment in U.S. shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing by creating Maritime Prosperity Zones (MPZs).
MPZs would incentivize and align new domestic and allied investment in U.S. maritime industries and waterfront communities. They also would address multiple supply and demand issues, and heighten cooperation with allies and partners to reduce dependence on unreliable suppliers.
“Expanding America’s shipbuilding production is vital for economic growth and national security,” Kelly said. “Currently, China, not the United States, has the world’s largest maritime fleet. The Shipbuilding Investment and Workforce Act takes a major step toward making America the dominant ship producer in our hemisphere, if not the world. Erie’s maritime past, its skilled manufacturing workforce, and geographic location make our region a perfect place to construct a new U.S. naval shipyard.”
The bill has the support of numerous organizations including the American Shipbuilders Suppliers Association, the Chamber of Marine Commerce, the Lake Carriers’ Association, and the Steel Manufacturers Association.
A proposed shipyard in Erie is projected to create 1,000 direct jobs and an additional 2.67 jobs for every shipyard job in other areas of the local economy.
