Rep. Cartwright proud of omnibus bill’s passage

U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA) released a statement following the enactment of the federal omnibus government funding bill.

“In this funding package, we have secured resources that invest in job creation, healthcare, and education right here in Northeastern Pennsylvania,” Cartwright said. “I’m proud it includes funding that will benefit communities and families across our region. With the government-funded and modest relief from this crisis on the way, I will keep fighting for more support for Northeastern Pennsylvanians until we defeat this virus.”

Cartwright’s district includes Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and the Poconos.

The funding bill includes six provisions that benefit Northeastern Pennsylvania. They include:

The Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Fund was renewed. It funds the cleanup of environmental hazards associated with abandoned mines. Some reclaimed mines in the region are under review to see if they can support the installation of solar panels.

The Appalachian Regional Commission received a $10 million increase in funding. The commission supports job creation and business growth initiatives.

The Assistance to Coal Mining Communities program received a $3.5 million increase. The program supports economic development projects.

The Power+ Plan received a $5 million increase. The program assists primarily former coal communities.

Cartwright also supported provisions that improve health care nationwide.
