The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) announced last week that Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman would serve as chair of the NAIC Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee.

“I’m humbled to have the opportunity to work with my colleagues on a national level to convene thought leaders and engage in meaningful dialogue to identify ways to make health insurance more affordable and accessible,” Altman said.

The Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee works to inform health insurance policy among the states by monitoring and coordinating state approaches to regulation and measuring the implications and effects of proposed and enacted federal legislation and regulations on states.

“I am eager to work with federal officials through this leadership position within the NAIC to implement policies that benefit consumers nationally as well as in Pennsylvania,” Altman said. “This position will also give me a great vantage point to see how other states are handling important health insurance issues, and bring the best ideas to Pennsylvania.”

One area of focus, Altman noted, is controlling health care costs. The Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee examines factors that contribute to rising health care costs and insurance premiums and reviews state initiatives to address cost drivers.
