Allentown Economic Development Corp. receives grant to help renovate former Allentown Metal Works site

Allentown Economic Development Corporation recently received approval for a $500,000 grant to renovate the former Allentown Metal Works site, which would support up to 75 new manufacturing jobs upon full occupancy.

The renovated building will provide a code-compliant shell ready for tenant fit-out by a heavy steel fabricator or similar manufacturing use. The renovated building will be capable of supporting 25-ton overhead cranes and, upon full occupancy, be able to house 50-75 employees.

The grant will help cover costs associated with roof replacement, wall and ceiling insulation and replacement of windows and doors at the facility, which was constructed in approximately 1903. The project is supported through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).

“Renovation of the Allentown Metal Works will play a key role in the city’s continued economic redevelopment,” Rep. Peter Schweyer (D-Lehigh County) said. “Moving forward with this project will open up job opportunities for our residents and I look forward to continuing to work with Governor Wolf, Representative Schlossberg and the Allentown Economic Development Corporation to develop this site.”

The project is important for Allentown due to the short supply of manufacturing space in Lehigh and Northampton counties, the governor’s office noted. Developing pad-ready manufacturing sites helps attract business to the area, creates jobs, and can facilitate economic development in the area.
