Legislation recently introduced in the state Senate would ensure the licensing and permitting processes would not be a barrier for homeowners who want to start or operate a small business.
“This legislation eliminates unnecessary red tape by streamlining the processes individuals use to operate a home-based business,” state Sen. Greg Rothman (R-Cumberland), who introduced the bill, said. “The bill would ensure home-based businesses are not forced to pay unnecessary fees or obtain cumbersome licenses and permits.
“Government should not impede hard working Pennsylvanians. This legislation ensures home-based businesses have a chance at prosperity.”
Technological advancements have made home-based businesses more viable, and many Pennsylvanians operate small businesses out of their homes yet local ordinances have failed to keep pace with technology.
“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy,” Greg Moreland, National Federation of Independent Businesses state director, said. “Easing onerous barriers for home-based businesses ensures they have the freedom to provide for their families and contribute to our communities.”
Senate Bill 1444 would have no impact on municipalities’ authority to address nuisances. It also would not regulate matters of public health and safety or hold bad actors accountable.
Pennsylvania small businesses positively impact the economy and serve the needs of the community, Rothman said.
