Jefferson Hills-based Kurt J. Lesker Co., a vacuum components, systems and solutions company, plans to invest $10 million to expand its operations in State College and to expand its Jefferson Hills headquarters.

In State College, the company leases space, in partnership with Penn State University, for research and development of the atomic layering disposition (ALD) process. ALD applies extremely thin layers of material to surfaces, helping improve products like computer chips, medical devices, batteries and protective coatings. This will allow the company to meet customer demand in the semiconductor and protective coating industries and will create five jobs.

Expansion of the company headquarters will support the production of ALD equipment and will create 34 jobs over the next four years.

“We’re a global organization serving customers around the world, with a strong foundation in Western Pennsylvania,” Kurt Lesker IV, Kurt J. Lesker Co. president and CEO, said. “This investment accelerates our atomic layer deposition capabilities, including advanced work in aluminum scandium nitride and other critical films that are enabling the next generation of high‑performance devices.”

The Department of Community and Economic Development submitted a funding proposal for a $300,000 Pennsylvania First grant and a $40,000 WEDNetPA grant to train employees.
