Legislation would prioritize American made products

Legislation recently introduced in the state House of Representatives would require state government operations prioritize American-made products when items are purchased.

House Bill 1917 would require the Pennsylvania Department of General Services (DGS) prioritize during the procurement process items produced, manufactured, grown or mined in the United States, including the purchase of finished products and raw materials.

If the DGS determines a particular product is not available in the United States, or not available in sufficient quantities, the determination will be announced publicly. Residents can file an objection to appeal DGS’ determination.

“Harrisburg spends millions of dollars on products to keep state government running as intended and it is my intent to make certain that American manufacturers have first shot at supplying those products,” Rep. Eric Davanzo (R-Westmoreland), who introduced the bill, said. “Why should those dollars go to other countries, when we have a motivated and agile workforce right in our own backyard?

“Countries like China and India have archaic labor laws and are producing subpar products. Plus, Chinese and Indian employees don’t spend their paychecks at restaurants, barber shops and other small businesses throughout Pennsylvania. When we’re talking about taxpayer dollars, it’s time to stack the deck in favor of American workers.”
