Report: U. S. Steel added $3.6B to local, state economy in 2022

Pittsburgh-based steel producer United States Steel Corp. (U. S. Steel) contributed $3.6 billion to the local and state economy and supported or sustained 11,417 jobs during fiscal year 2022, according to a recent economic impact report.

Of the $3.6 billion, $1.9 billion was direct economic impact and $1.7 billion was indirect or induced impact. When considering jobs, 3,703 were direct positions and 7,714 were indirect or induced.

U. S. Steel paid $138.2 million in taxes.

“At U. S. Steel, we are thrilled to be the best partner to the communities in which we serve. We are deeply rooted in Pennsylvania, having operated here for more than a century,” David B. Burritt, U. S. Steel president and CEO, said.

The study took into consideration the company’s direct spending on operations, pay, benefits, and capital projects, and the estimated increase in demand for goods and services in sectors the company supplies or supports.

U. S. Steel commissioned the study that Parker Philips, a Erie-based consulting firm that specializes in economic impact analysis, conducted.

U. S. Steel’s corporate headquarters is in Pittsburgh an it operates in Braddock, Clairton, Fairless Hills, Munhall, and West Mifflin. It has an annual raw steelmaking capability of 22.4 million net tons.
