CNX, Sapphire Technologies partner to develop new system to generate clean electricity

Pittsburgh-based CNX Resources, a natural gas development, production, midstream, and technology company, recently partnered with California-based Sapphire Technologies, a developer and manufacturer of energy recovery systems for hydrogen and natural gas applications, to develop a FreeSpin In-line Turboexpander solution for high-pressure service.

During the pilot program, CNX will integrate Sapphire’s turboexpanders to harvest waste energy and generate zero-emissions electricity. This is the first partnership to develop clean energy at an Appalachian site.

“Building on our proven track record of technological innovation within the industry, CNX is pleased to partner with Sapphire Technologies on this groundbreaking installation as we continue to integrate carbon-reducing processes throughout our asset base,” said Ravi Srivastava, CNX president of new technologies. “This partnership demonstrates CNX’s ability to supply new process solutions and illustrates how we are leading the development of clean, locally-sourced energy solutions for the Appalachian region and beyond.”

Sapphire Technologies develops and manufactures energy recovery systems that convert energy wasted in pressure reduction processes to produce clean electricity.

CNX Resources Corp. had 9.63 trillion cubic feet equivalent of proved natural gas reserves in Appalachia as of Dec. 31, 2021. The company recently released its Appalachia First vision, a plan to prioritize producing and using natural gas in Appalachia.
