The tech industry in Pennsylvania added nearly 9,900 new jobs last year, a new report from CompTIA said last week.
CompTIA’s annual “State of the Tech Workforce” report found that net tech employment in the state grew by 3.4 percent, the eighth-highest total among all states. The increase was slightly above the national average of 3.2 percent. CompTIA predicts Pennsylvania will see a 2.8 percent increase in tech employment in 2023 – an additional 8,300 new tech jobs – the ninth-highest total in the country.
Pennsylvania’s tech workforce includes more than 300,000 people, encompassing both technical and non-technical workers employed by tech companies, as well as tech professionals who work in other industries. The tech workforce is nearly 5 percent of the state’s overall workforce. Tech workers make a median wage of $86,082, 100 percent higher than the median wage for all other occupations in the state.
With an estimated 18,456 tech businesses, the state’s tech industry has a $51.3 billion economic impact and represents 6.3 percent of the state’s economy, the report said. More than 1,550 new businesses opened last year – the sixth-highest total in the country.
According to the report, positions in software development, programming, web development, and quality assurance are the positions that will likely see growth this year, followed by database, data science, and analytics, as well as cybersecurity and systems engineering.
