Facility that can convert plastic into a concrete additive opens in York

CRDC Global, a global disruptive building materials company, recently opened its first United States facility in York for converting difficult-to-recycle plastic waste into a new concrete additive called RESIN8.

The facility will recycle the city’s unwanted plastic waste into RESIN8 at a rate of approximately one ton of plastic per hour. It can take any type of plastic waste as raw material.

RESIN8 has up to 20 percent better insulation properties than traditional concrete and is up to 15 percent lighter or stronger, depending on its usage. It also is lighter than concrete and fire resistant.

“The greatest appeal of RESIN8 lies in its ability to provide both an environmental benefit and commercial benefit,” CRDC Global CEO Donald Thomson said. “So, while we’re helping to clean up plastic waste, we’re also providing a product that stands on its own in terms of its performance and commercial viability.”

The additive is designed to be used by the construction industry in ready-mix concrete, pre-cast concrete, mortars, blocks and pavers, and hot mix asphalt.

The Pennsylvania facility is built with the support of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, a global nonprofit organization with the mission to end plastic waste in the environment.
