On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Coal Alliance (PCA) announced its winners of the Keystone Mine Safety Awards and the PCA Reclamation Awards.
The awards were given to PCA members who prioritize safety and the commitment to reclaiming coal mine sites throughout the state. Cleveland Cliffs, North Fork Mine won the Best Overall award, while PBS Coals, Inc., Hart Mine won for best large project. Wilson Creek Energy, Hamer Mine won for medium-sized project, and Heritage Coal and Natural Resources, Saylor Mine won for small projects. All of the mines are located in Somerset County.
Reclamation awards were chosen in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Active and Abandoned Mine Operations based on pre-mining conditions, reclamation quality, the degree of difficulty, and the correction of environmental and safety hazards.
Winners of the Keystone Mine Safety awards included CONSOL Energy, Enlow Fork Mine in Greene and Washington Counties in the Longwall division; Rosebud Mining Company, Madison Mine in Cambria County in the large continuous mine division; Rosebud Mining Company, Penfield Mine in Clearfield County in the small continuous mine division; Heritage Natural Resources, Mast Mine in Somerset County in the large surface mine division and RES Coal LLC, RES Houtzdale in Clearfield County in the small surface mine division.
The winners of the Keystone Mine Safety are chosen based on the lowest non-fatal day lost (NFDL) rates in the prior calendar year.
“In addition to coal being the backbone of Pennsylvania’s energy production and manufacturing, our members take pride in their commitment to employees’ safety and environmental stewardship,” said PCA Executive Director Rachel Gleason. “These awards honor their continued dedication to protecting the Commonwealth’s two most important resources.”
Awards for Manufacturing and Field Service were also announced. They were given to JENNMAR in Allegheny County in the large manufacturer division and to JENNCHEM in Allegheny County in the large field service division.
