PhilaPort receives $20.3M federal grant for Tioga Marine Terminal project

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded the Port of Philadelphia (PhilaPort) a $20.3 million Infrastructure for Rebuilding America grant for its Tioga Marine Terminal project.

The port will build a 100,000-square-foot warehouse and modernize the terminal’s main gate.

The new warehouse will help the terminal attract more business and meet the growing demand for pulp, project cargoes, steel, and lumber products. Tioga Marine Terminal will have more than 800,000 square feet of on-dock warehousing when completed.

Modernizing the gate will increase safety and lower emissions by reducing truck queuing/idling and the conversion of cargo from truck to rail.

“Safety of our labor force is paramount,” Jerry Sweeney, PhilaPort board of directors chairman, said. “With a modernized gate and approach to the terminal, we can ensure that both the port and public are protected as the port continues to grow.”

The project also is expected to improve truck circulation and terminal efficiencies, improve connections to the regional multimodal network, and result in new cargo capture.

PhilaPort and Delaware River Stevedores, the facility’s terminal operator, developed the project together.

Construction is expected to begin in 2024.

Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration has invested more than $539 million in the port’s infrastructure, warehousing, and equipment since 2016.
