Thermo Fisher $40M Millersburg manufacturing plant expansion set to create 100+ jobs

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. plans to invest $40 million to expand its single-use technology manufacturing facility in Millersburg, Pa., creating more than 100 local jobs.

“Pennsylvania is proud that Thermo Fisher Scientific is expanding in Dauphin County and is creating 100 new jobs in the region,” said Gov. Tom Wolf on Tuesday. “The bioprocessing solutions that Thermo Fisher Scientific will produce in Millersburg will help to power the local economy and strengthen our position in the science and technology sectors.”

The publicly traded Thermo Fisher Scientific, a supplier of scientific instrumentation, reagents and consumables, and software services, bought the Millersburg facility in 2015, and for the last two years has built out and modernized the warehouse and clean rooms. 

Wolf said that part of what brought the company to Pennsylvania is its highly educated, skilled and talented workforce, leading universities, and location near other major cities.  

The second phase of the site expansion includes a new, 47,000-square f00t warehouse, the company said, adding that once the renovation is completed by mid-2023, more than 1,000 people will be employed at the site.

U.S. Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), who serves the 10th District where the plant is located, said his constituents “are tremendously grateful for the vision, investment and job creation” being brought to Millersburg by Thermo Fisher Scientific.

“We know our folks will continue to make this world-class company and our community proud,” said the congressman.

The Millersburg plant expansion is part of the Waltham, Mass.-based company’s $650 million multi-year investment announced last fall to ramp up bioprocessing production capacity for critical materials used in developing biologics and vaccines, including for COVID-19, according to Thermo Fisher Scientific.

“Since the start of the pandemic, the Millersburg site has been instrumental in supporting more than 20 pharmaceutical partners developing life-saving therapies and vaccines,” said Mitch Kennedy, president of single-use technologies at Thermo Fisher Scientific. 

And during the ongoing pandemic, Kennedy said the company’s colleagues in Millersburg have answered the call for increased production. “Our expanded bioprocessing capabilities will ensure that we can continue to deliver essential supplies to our customers as demand surges,” he said.
