Westinghouse Electric signs contract for boiling water reactor

Westinghouse Electric Co. and Exelon Generation recently signed an instrumentation and control (I&C) modernization contract for the installation of boiling water reactor (BWR) units at the Limerick Generating Station.

The BWR units will replace the analog-based Reactor Protection System and several other systems with a single Plant Protection System.

In addition, digital displays and annunciators will be displayed in the main control room. This will increase system reliability and optimize surveillances.

“While Limerick Generating Station continues to demonstrate its strong record of operational excellence, we continue to invest in upgrading the plant to ensure long-term reliability,” Frank Sturniolo, Limerick Generating Station site vice president, said. “Limerick is essential to providing carbon-free energy to Southeastern Pennsylvania, and these upgrades will help that effort continue for decades to come.”

This is the first fully digitized safety system in a BWR plant located in the United States.

Westinghouse Electric Co. provides a full range of I&C solutions. In 1957, the company supplied the world’s first commercial pressurized water reactor, and the company’s technology has been the basis for nearly one-half of the world’s operating nuclear plants. This experience has made Westinghouse the preferred partner for technologies covering the complete nuclear energy life cycle.
