Montauk awarded patent for energy system

The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office recently issued Pittsburgh-based Montauk Renewables, a renewable energy company, with a patent covering 24 unique elements of its Electric-Powered, Closed-Loop, Continuous-Feed, Endothermic Energy-Conversion Systems and Methods.

“We are excited to announce that the US Patent Office has recognized the uniqueness of our technology and granted this patent, which will enable Montauk to continue to pioneer new approaches to address the environmental impacts of industrial agriculture, while further diversifying our product offerings in the renewable energy economy,” Sean McClain, Montauk Renewables CEO, said.

The technology is driven by a continuous-feed, closed loop reactor that can be scaled for any size or location. It addresses the environmental challenges of industrial agriculture by enabling near-zero-emissions conversion of agricultural waste into multiple non-fossil, renewable-fuel alternatives.

It is capable of producing approximately 10-units of renewable energy for each unit of conventional energy consumed and can sequester approximately 25-tons of greenhouse gas equivalent emissions for every single ton emitted.

The technology initially will be deployed in a large-scale development project in North Carolina.

Montauk specializes in biogas recovery, management and conversion into renewable natural gas. It also provides renewable natural gas and renewable electricity.

The company operates at 15 projects located in seven states
