Georgia-Pacific opening Jonestown facility

Georgia-Pacific, an integrated packaging supplier, announced plans to open a Jonestown facility to meet the growing demand for sustainable shipping envelopes.

The company is also opening a location in McDonough, Ga., and adding a third production line at its Phoenix plant.

The facilities will manufacture easy-to-recycle mailers in multiple sizes, increasing the availability of curbside recyclable mailers and expand the availability of mailers to the company’s customers in the Northeast and Southeast, including Amazon.

Amazon began using paper padded mailers in 2019 that are manufactured at Georgia-Pacific’s Palatka, Fla., paper mill. Consumers can recycle the mailers with other paper-based curbside recyclables.

“The response to the functionality and recyclability has been very favorable from key customers like Amazon and from consumers,” Adam Ganz, Georgia-Pacific vice president of commercial development and leader of the mailer business, said. “We are eager to expand the availability of this more sustainable alternative to non-recyclable dual material mailers. This investment demonstrates our commitment to increasing sustainable solutions for the rapidly-growing e-commerce segment.”

The new locations will be operational by the end of the year, and approximately 50 employees will be hired in both Pennsylvania and Georgia.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia‐Pacific is a provider of a full range of packaging solutions.
