Bayer, a global supplier of medical devices, recently announced it will build a 220,000-square-foot distribution center to support its global radiology business near its Saxonburg manufacturing site.
“We are excited to build upon over 50 years of history serving our global customers from the Pittsburgh region, with the construction of this new Distribution Center,” Jeff Owoc, Bayer’s senior vice president and global head of Medical Device Operations, said. “The center will not only allow for future growth of our radiology business but will enable us to continue to invest in the local Pittsburgh community.”
Bayer employs approximately 1,300 people in Pittsburgh.
The new building will store and distribute injectors and sterile disposables kits manufactured at Bayer’s Saxonburg, O’Hara, and Indianola facilities. It will be operated and staffed by FedEx Supply Chain.
The building will include administrative office spaces, one drive-in dock, one compactor, 28 loading docks, and 60 tractor-trailer staging areas. It will operate with updated warehouse and labor management systems and enhanced system connectivity.
Bayer will hold a 10-year lease with optional extensions. The property has the option of expanding up to 80,000 square feet to accommodate future growth.
Bayer’s current distribution center is located in New Galilee. The lease expires in March 2022.
