United States Steel Corporation recently released its 2019 Sustainability Report, which highlights the company’s accomplishments in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues and is aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative.

“ESG and sustainability-focused initiatives are top priorities for our company,” David B. Burritt U.S. Steel president and CEO, said. “By integrating these priorities with our strategy of ‘best of both’ integrated and mini mill technologies, we are building a truly sustainable future for U. S. Steel and our stakeholders. We must continue to implement industry best practices, with a particular focus on safety, efficiency, environmental stewardship, and innovation that endure for future generations.”

Report highlights include achieving a new company safety record with a Days Away from Work Rate of 0.10; recycling approximately 3 million tons annually of scrap steel to create new steel, without losing the material’s mechanical properties; and establishing a global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity reduction goal.

The GHG goal will use mini mills, energy-efficiency initiatives, and improvement to integrated steelmaking facilities. The company plans to reduce its global GHG emissions intensity by 20 percent by 2030.

The company’s safety record is 80 percent better than the Bureau of Labor Statistics for Iron and Steel rate.
