A bipartisan group of 39 attorneys general, including Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, recently sent a letter to Congressional leaders urging lawmakers to ensure all Americans, especially those in rural communities, have access to home internet.
Connectivity is essential because internet access has become critical for basic needs during COVID-19, including working from home, remote learning, and telemedicine.
Some private companies have offered free or discounted access to students and medical providers, or have waived late fees to increase access. The United States needs a national solution, the attorneys general said.
Disparities in connectivity will continue to grow if there is no national solution, the attorneys general said, exacerbating existing gaps along geographic, economic, and racial lines.
The attorneys general urged Congress to increase funding to the Federal Communication Commission Universal Service Fund and provide state, territorial, and local governments with adequate funding.
The National Association of Attorneys General strongly supports expanding broadband nationwide.
