Marcellus Shale Coalition companies mobilize support for hospital, communities during COVID-19 pandemic

Several local energy companies, all members of the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC), have upped their efforts to help communities, first responders, and medical professionals respond to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

ExxonMobil has shifted its operations to manufacture isopropyl alcohol, a key ingredient needed for the production of hand sanitizers, alcohol wipes, and disinfectant sprays. The company has also partnered with the Global Center for Medical Innovation to develop projects to rapidly redesign and manufacture reusable personal protection equipment, such as face shields and masks, for health care workers. Prototypes are currently being tested and reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“Expediting advanced technologies to help those who are combatting this global pandemic is absolutely critical for society,” said Karen McKee, president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company. “We’re proud to do our part by sharing our expertise and experience in material technologies, and energy supplies needed to support our health care workers. It’s just one example of ExxonMobil employees working around the clock to help keep our communities safe and limiting the spread of COVID-19.”

Range Resources committed to a more than $100,000 community stimulus package, which will include funding for food and basic needs, healthcare, employment resources, education, domestic violence services, and senior citizen care. Additionally, Range has also donated protective health supplies to the Washington Health System and laptop and computers to the Bentworth School District to help students participate in remote learning.

“This pandemic has made it clear how essential our non-profits are, but more importantly, how fortunate we are to have them within our communities,” Range officials said in a statement.

NRG Energy, Inc. has pledged $2 million in charitable contributions for first responders, small businesses, teachers, and communities within their Pennsylvania and New Jersey operating areas. The company has also allocated additional funding to the NRG Employee Relief Fund.

Cabot Oil & Gas pledged $50,000 to the Weinberg Food Bank, provided hospitals and first responders with protective suits and safety glasses, and helped rural school districts transition to remote learning by donating laptops and other essential school supplies.

Several companies have also contributed to local food banks.

The EQT Foundation’s $360,000 donations to community foundations and food banks, and Southwestern Energy’s $50,000 donations to food banks and local pantries in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Texas. The Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania, with support from Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, served 1,750 meals to families and individuals impacted by COVID-19.

“Although life may be disrupted for the time being,” MSC President Daniel J. Spigelmyer said. “We have been heartened by our members’ unwavering support for the communities in which we are privileged to work and live.”
