Sen. Wayne D. Fontana (D-42) recently announced that Giant Eagle, Inc. received a $300,000 state grant to purchase 20 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks, which will save more than 355,000 gasoline gallon equivalents per year.
“This grant program helps businesses convert to cheaper and more environmentally friendly fuels,” Fontana said. “I am pleased to see local businesses embracing alternative fuel opportunities and will continue to seek state support to encourage such efforts.”
The state Department of Environmental Protection administered the grant through the Alternative Fuels Incentive Grants Program, which helps businesses replace older vehicles with cleaner natural gas and electric-fueled vehicles. The Giant Eagle grant was one of 18 grants announced last week.
“Promoting the use of alternative fuels helps businesses lower costs while taking advantage of advances in clean energy vehicle technology,” Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin said. “It’s important for us to support businesses looking to switch to alternative vehicle fuels in order to help those businesses thrive here in Pennsylvania.”
