New Jersey-based Anax Power, a company generating clean power from natural gas without combustion, recently signed an agreement with Alberta-based Enbridge, an oil and gas company, to install the Anax Turboexpander System (ATE) in Pennsylvania and Ontario.

“This collaboration reflects our ongoing commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through innovative, sustainable solutions,” Steven Greenley, Enbridge Gas senior vice president of commercial, said. “We take pride in utilizing our natural gas systems to champion environmental initiatives to enhance the well-being of the communities we operate in.”

The ATE uses the pressure and flow of natural gas within a pipeline to drive a turbine and generate zero-emissions electricity. The system uses excess cooling to improve server efficiency and thermal management.

Anax will install up to four ATEs in Pennsylvania and up to three in Ontario. This will be Anax’s second installation in Pennsylvania. The projects will power Ohio-based Magellan Scientific’s data centers. In Pennsylvania, the system will have a capacity of up to 2 megawatts of clean energy while in Ontario the capacity will be up to 1.5 megawatts.

Enbridge is the first major pipeline in North America to adopt the ATE. The company plans to add hundreds of locations across its system in the coming years.
