Alcoa named to Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

Alcoa, a producer of aluminum, alumina and bauxite products, was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for the world and North America on Wednesday.

This is Alcoa’s second time on the world list.

The indices list sustainable companies in each industry based on environmental, social, financial, and governance factors.

The World Index represents the top 10 percent of the largest 2,500 companies on the S&P Global Broad Market Index (BMI). The North America Index represents the top 20 percent of the largest 600 North American companies on the S&P Global BMI.

“Alcoa continually strives to create sustainable value in the communities where we operate, enhance the value of our products, and improve the environmental footprint of our operations,” Michelle O’Neill, Alcoa senior vice president of global government affairs and sustainability, said. “Our inclusion in these distinctive indices is an important recognition for the work we complete across our global operations.”

In May, Alcoa and Rio Tinto, one of the world’s largest metals and mining corporations, announced a process to make aluminum that eliminates all direct greenhouse gas emissions from the traditional smelting process while producing oxygen. This process was the culmination of many Alcoa employees, according to Alcoa’s 2017 Sustainability Report, and was sought after in the industry.
