Rep. Barletta recognized by National Retail Federation

The National Retail Federation (NRF), the world’s largest retail trade association, recently presented U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) with its “Hero of Main Street” award.

Barletta was recognized for his support of policies crucial to the retail industry.

“The overwhelming majority of retailers are small businesses, with more than
98 percent of retail companies employing less than 50 people,” Barletta said. “As a former small business owner, I know firsthand how these companies create jobs, drive innovation, and give back to the communities they serve. I look forward to continuing my support of the retailers who do just that in Pennsylvania and am proud to be recognized by these men and women as a Hero of Main Street.”

John Holub, executive director of the Pennsylvania Retailers Association, presented the award.

Barletta deserved the award because he understands the critical importance of the retail industry and its impact on Pennsylvania’s economy, Holub said.

NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay echoed these sentiments.

“Retailers and consumers are feeling good about the state of the U.S. economy, and a big part of that is the result of lawmakers who have made economic growth and job creation a top priority,” Shay said. “As a Hero of Main Street, Congressman Barletta truly understands that the decisions made in Washington have a real impact on local businesses and communities across the country.”

The nation’s largest private-sector employer is the retail industry. Retail supports one in four jobs, which is the equivalent of 42 million Americans.

More than 8,560 retail establishments exist in Pennsylvania and directly employ more than 61,000 people and support more than 86,000 additional positions.
