Canonsburg-based Vision RNG, a developer, owner, and operator of landfill gas (LFG) to renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities, recently completed an agreement to sell more than 47,000 LFG voluntary carbon credits to Texas-based NRG Business Marketing LLC.

The agreement includes all credits the Climate Action Reserve generated, verified, and issued for Vintage 23 credits from the landfill. Credits were generated via the collection and destruction of landfill gas methane from the Lunenburg Landfill in Lunenburg, Va., with individual credits representing one ton of carbon dioxide equivalent not emitted into the atmosphere.

“Vision RNG is very excited to be delivering voluntary carbon credits from an LFG project,” Bill Johnson, Vision RNG CEO, said. “We expect this to be the first of many carbon credit sale opportunities within our growing portfolio of LFG projects. Voluntary carbon credits are an excellent tool that help to fund a landfill’s gas collection system. This allows the early collection and destruction of methane, a very powerful greenhouse gas, prior to a landfill being required to do so by EPA regulations.”

Vision RNG is supported by Vision Ridge Partners, a venture capital and private equity firm. It is developing several landfill gas projects that it anticipates will generate voluntary carbon credits.
