Vision RNG announced Monday a long-term gas rights agreement with the Greenwood County South Carolina landfill.

The agreement, which could last as long as 25 years, will provide Vision RNG with raw landfill gas, a natural byproduct of decomposing landfill waste. While landfill gas is usually collected and burned off, officials said collecting and converting the methane in LFG into renewable fuel can reduce the need for new fossil fuels.

“We are delighted to be partnered with Greenwood County on this project,” Vision RNG CEO Bill Johnson says. “As our portfolio of landfill gas projects continues to expand, we are making a real impact on reducing methane emissions, capturing that wasted greenhouse gas and putting it to good use.”

The company said its personnel will work with Greenwood County and the landfill personnel over the next year to optimize gas collections and to determine how much gas is available, and what kind of project the landfill can support – a renewable natural gas project or a power production project. If the gas production can support an RNG, officials said, the LFG will be used by customers across the U.S. for transportation fuel and other purposes. If power is produced, the power will be sold directly to the local grid operator.

“Greenwood County is proud to partner with Vision RNG on this long-term agreement,” Greenwood County Council Chairman Chuck Moates said. “By capturing methane from our landfill and converting it into renewable energy, we are taking meaningful action that makes sense both environmentally and economically. We look forward to seeing the positive effects of this project for many years to come.”
