On Tuesday, the Campbell Soup Company announced it will invest millions into its Hanover, Pa., plant as part of a larger investment to transform its supply chain, and improve effectiveness and efficiency.
The $72 million investment into its Hanover plant will add additional potato chip kettles to the plant and create 72 new positions, officials said.
Overall, the company announced it is investing $240 million in network-wide projects in an effort to drive best-in-class manufacturing capabilities and to leverage co-manufacturing partners.
“To fuel growth and transform our manufacturing and distribution network, we must invest and further strengthen our supply chain,” said Dan Poland, Campbell’s Chief Supply Chain Officer. “By leveraging our best-in-class in-house capabilities combined with the expertise of trusted manufacturing partners, we will continue to make the highest quality products, with a more agile, flexible, and cost-effective manufacturing network. We continue to evaluate optimization opportunities across the network to build our supply chain of the future.”
The Hanover plant investment will mean a switch from the company’s Jeffersonville, IN plant from kettle potato chips to tortilla chips, the company said. The change there will go into effect in July of this year and will impact 85 of the 230 employees at the plant. That plant will also continue to make regional snack brands, officials said.
The company will also close its plant in Tualatin, Ore. That plant, acquired in 2017, produces organic soup, broth and plant-based beverages. The company said it will close the facility in phases and expects to cease operations completely by July 2026. Officials said the soup and broth production will move to other thermal and aseptic plants in the company’s network. Plant-based beverage production will be shifted to co-manufacturing partners, the company said.
“We recognize this is difficult news for our teams in Tualatin and Jeffersonville,” Poland said. “Any action that impacts our people is made with careful deliberation, and we are committed to provide support and assistance during these changes.”
