Mars to collaborate with Pittsburgh-based Ansys on digital packaging innovation

On Wednesday, Mars, Incorporated announced it would partner with Pittsburgh-based Ansys on a new simulation software to reimagine Mars’ packaging process.

The simulation solution by Ansys is primed to cut Mars’ development time for packaging processes down by as much as 40 percent, officials said. Mars said use of the simulation technology as already reduced the quantity of plastics purchased by Mars or testing by an estimated 246 tons. Mars, the maker of M&M’S, ROYAL CANIN and SNICKERS, said it will leverage the simulation approach to virtual testing and prototyping on new packaging for its snacking portfolio.

“In the world we want tomorrow, no packaging becomes waste,” Qing Qi, VP R&D global innovation at Mars Snacking, said. “This vision is at the heart of our multi-billion dollar Sustainable in a Generation plan and will only become a reality by taking unconstrained strides, leveraging breakthrough science, innovative thinking and partnerships to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

The multi-physics simulation testing will minimize the need for physical testing during the packaging development process while providing insights into a number of aspects of the production phase, including wrapping, drop tests and failure scenarios. Mars said the collaboration with Ansys will help the company achieve its ultimate goal of using 100 percent reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging.
