Saint-Gobain invests in industrial battery company

Malvern-based NOVA by Saint-Gobain recently invested an undisclosed amount in ION Storage Systems, an industrial battery provider, expanding the relationship between Saint-Gobain Ceramics and ION.

The investment is part of NOVA by Saint-Gobain’s strategy of finding startups that provide innovative solutions. It brings Saint-Gobain Ceramics expertise and insight on battery applications while enabling ION Storage to grow.

“We believe that electrification is one of the critical grand challenges in the global transformation needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Nicolas Miegeville, Saint-Gobain Ceramics CEO, said. “Working with the Ion Storage team on solid-state lithium metal batteries is an exciting initiative to engineer a better, safer and greener world.”

“The world is rapidly evolving towards a more resilient, mobile and electrified economy,” Ricky Hanna, ION Storage Systems CEO said “The backbone of this movement are the batteries that will power it and, until now, battery technologies simply haven’t been up to the moment.”

French-based Saint-Gobain designs, manufactures and distributes materials and services for the construction and industrial markets. Its products are designed to decarbonize construction and industry. The company employs 168,000 people in 75 countries. In 2022, sales totaled $56.3 billion.

ION Storage Systems provides battery solutions for aerospace, consumer electronics, defense, electric vehicles, and grid storage applications.
