Lehigh Valley-based Air Products, an industrial gas company, recently announced that its Air Products Membrane Solutions’ membrane-based nitrogen generation systems now can be found in 2,000 seagoing vessels worldwide.
“This is a tremendous milestone for Air Products Membrane Solutions,” Dr. Erin Sorensen, Air Products Membrane Solutions, general manager, said. “Almost four decades after pioneering this technology, Air Products continues to innovate and support the energy transition by providing membrane systems to alternative fuel ships, enabling a cleaner future.”
The membrane-based nitrogen generation systems enable large ships to switch at sea from traditional heavy fuels to cleaner alternative fuels. The first system was installed in 1984 and now is used in ships from more than 50 countries.
The systems are designed and manufactured at Air Products’ Norway facility.
Air Products Membrane Solutions specializes in the development of hollow fiber membrane separators and systems for onsite gas generation. It engineers and fabricates turnkey systems for shipboard and land-based applications that are designed to create more sustainable energy sources and raise productivity across a variety of industries and applications.
The company’s shipboard systems include alternative fuel systems, chemical tankers, liquefied natural gas, and oil platforms applications.
Air Products operates in approximately 50 countries and employs approximately 23,000 people.
