For fiscal year 2022-23, Penn State’s total research expenditures reached $1.239 billion — a record high and a 14 percent increase from the previous year.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and enterprise of our outstanding faculty, students and staff,” Andrew Read, Penn State interim senior vice president for research, said. “It reflects the ongoing confidence of our sponsors in our ability to successfully address some of the world’s most pressing problems. We are enormously proud of our researchers and our research administration team.”
The figure includes a $98 million increase in federal funding for research. Funding is obtained from a variety of sources. This includes federal and state agencies as well as the university, private donors, and sponsors.
Penn State researchers submitted more than 5,000 grant proposals to external funding agencies last year. To receive funding, the projects must undergo a competitive review process and be evaluated for quality and impact.
During the fiscal year, all academic units reported increases in research funding. The Applied Research Laboratory had the largest increase, 26.7 percent, for a total of $350.5 million.
Federal funding included $85.3 million from the National Science Foundation and $174 million from the Department of Health and Human Services.
