Cranberry Township-based Westinghouse Electric Co. recently launched a new design and manufacturing facility near downtown Pittsburgh.
The 87,000-square-foot, at least $18 million facility will be home to eVinci Technologies LLC, a separate business unit within the company.
The facility will accelerate the commercialization of the eVinci microreactor, a transportable nuclear battery technology, and will manufacture heat pipes for the microreactor as well as components that do not involve nuclear material. The building also will contain space for business development and sales, engineering and licensing, testing, and prototype trials.
“We believe the eVinci technology will truly change lives and livelihoods for the better,” Patrick Fragman, Westinghouse President and CEO said. “Thanks to the support from the U.S. Department of Energy and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, we are making big strides to deploy at speed and at scale. We are targeting to have multiple eVinci microreactors in operation throughout the world by the end of this decade, and the work we do here will make that possible.”
Construction is expected to be completed in early 2024. The facility is expected to create more than 40 jobs.
The Department of Community and Economic Development submitted a funding proposal for a $1.08 million Pennsylvania First grant.
