Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, recently announced it will invest approximately $22 million to upgrade its Hays Mine Water Treatment Plant’s safety, controls, and equipment.
The plant delivers up to 30 million gallons daily to 132,000 customers in southern Allegheny County.
Upgrades will include replacing caustic soda tanks to improve the system’s resilience, reliability, and safety; replacing solids handling equipment to improve efficiency and reliability, and lessen water use associated with the treatment process; and renovating 16 approximately 70-year-old filters to maintain a high level of water quality.
“It is crucial to upgrade our infrastructure proactively to maintain safe and reliable water service,” Engineering Manager Rachael Beam said. “This investment demonstrates our commitment to upgrading infrastructure and enhancing safety at our drinking water treatment plants.”
The upgrades will improve public health and safety.
Last year, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $490 million statewide to improve water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems.
In 2023, the company invested approximately $85 million improving water and sewer systems in Allegheny, Fayette, and Washington counties.
