The Appalachian Regional Commission recently awarded Erie County Redevelopment Authority (ECRDA) a $1.5 million grant for the Ironworks Square project on the former Erie Malleable Iron site in the city of Erie.
ECRDA owns the 70,000-square-foot property and plans to turn it into a mixed-use facility for local businesses.
“This project is a great example of local and federal leaders working together to improve the Erie community,” U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) said. “By providing additional funding for this project, we are furthering our commitment to create jobs in the City of Erie and to breathe new life into this historic property. I look forward to working with the Erie County Redevelopment Authority and local leaders to finish the job.”
Kelly wrote a letter of support for ECRDA’s grant request.
Last year, Kelly secured $24.8 million in Community Project Funding, including $3 million for the Ironworks Square project. The federal aid is for local infrastructure and community-focused projects
Following the announcement, Kelly toured the property and received an update about this year’s progress.
The Appalachian Regional Commission is the economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 423 counties across the Appalachian region with the goal of strengthening economic growth in Appalachia.
