The House Republican Policy Committee recently met in Lehigh Valley to discuss bringing more business to the region with local leaders.

The goal was to highlight the economic importance of tourism and discuss ways government can help the travel and tourism industry thrive.

Testifiers also discussed obstacles that might inhibit growth in the hospitality industry and gave suggestions on how to bring more visitors to the region.

Several local attractions, such as Musikfest, Dorney Park and Iron Pigs baseball games, bring millions of tourist into the region annually.

Testifiers include Kassie Hilgert, ArtsQuest president and CEO; and Alex Michaels, Discover Lehigh Valley CEO.

“This is an industry that is recruiting people and we need to have cultural amenities in our state that make us competitive in recruiting and retaining employees to keep people here to start families and businesses,” Hilgert said.

“Outdoor enthusiasts and tourists often find themselves visiting the Lehigh Valley and its parks, scenic trails and beautiful riverside areas,” Michaels said. “We would love the support from the state on infrastructure and keeping our roads clean, along with an investment in transportation, such as trolley systems, so it will be easier for visitors to explore our region.”

Lawmakers will use the testimony to develop tourism-related legislation.
