Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corp. (U. S. Steel) recently announced it will be building applications using Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) technology to improve efficiency and improve employee experiences in North America’s largest iron ore mine.

“We’ve meaningfully accelerated digitization at U. S. Steel through our work with Google Cloud,” David Burritt, U. S. Steel president and CEO, said. “Faster repair times, less down time, and more satisfying work for our techs are only some of the many benefits we expect with generative AI. I’m thrilled that the U. S. Steel team is a manufacturing leader in this work.”

MineMind will be the first gen AI-driven application launched. It will simplify equipment maintenance by providing solutions to mechanical problems, and the company expects it will reduce costs by using technicians’ time more efficient and having better maintained trucks.

The app will launch next month at U. S. Steel’s Minnesota Ore Operations facilities, Minntac and Keetac.

When fully operational, MineMind will allow technicians to reduce the amount of time needed to complete a work order by an estimated 20 percent.

The company plans to work with Google Cloud to build additional gen AI applications such as applications providing real-time data and insights.
