A total of 90 percent of voters believe natural gas and oil play an important role in strengthening the U.S. economy, according to a recent survey Morning Consult conducted on behalf of the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Morning Consult surveyed 2,003 registered voters in June. API commissioned the survey after a recent study on the growing economic contributions of America’s natural gas and oil industry. This includes work force wages and taxes paid to indirect and induced jobs throughout the energy supply chain.

In 2021, the industry contributed nearly $1.8 trillion to the U.S. economy and supported 10.8 million jobs.

The survey also found that 80 percent of respondents support the increased development of energy infrastructure, 88 percent believe it is important to produce natural gas and oil in the United States, 83 percent believe the government should consider economic data when developing regulations potentially affecting the development of energy infrastructure, 85 percent believe producing natural gas and oil domestically helps make the United States more secure against countries such as China and Russia, and 88 percent believe that producing natural gas and oil in the United States can help lower energy costs for American consumers and small businesses.

API represents all segments of the natural gas and oil industry.
