The Monell Chemical Senses Center, a Philadelphia-based independent nonprofit basic research institute, recently named Benjamin P.C. Smith as its next president and director.

“Ben’s sheer breadth of research and leadership roles contribute to his success at building and fostering innovative scientific partnerships with universities, the private sector, and government entities,” Dr. David Macnair, Monell board of directors chairman, said. “This extensive set of skills uniquely positions him to lead Monell through a stage of explosive growth.”

Smith holds a doctorate in environmental toxicology and has worked on taste, smell, and nutrition. He previously worked at Monell from 2002 to 2003 as a postdoctoral fellow studying behavioral genetics.

He is an adjunct associate professor of food toxicology and risk assessment at Nanyang Technological University and director of the Singapore Future Ready Food Safety Hub and of A*STAR Innovations in Food & Chemical Safety Programme.

Dr. Nancy E. Rawson, Monell acting director and president, will remain in the positions until later this year when Smith arrives at Monell.

Smith will be the organization’s fourth permanent director.

The Monell Chemical Senses Center was founded in 1968. Its goal is to improve health and well-being by advancing the scientific understanding of taste, smell, and related senses.
