Coherent Corp., a materials, networking, and lasers company based in Saxonburg, Pa., recently announced it is obtaining more than half of its global electricity needs from renewable energy sources and powering more than 80 percent of its sites from renewable electricity.

This represents more than 500 million kilowatt hours of renewable electricity annually, eliminating approximately 85,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

“We are fulfilling the commitment we announced last year to increase the sustainability in our energy supply across our global footprint,” said Tim Challingsworth, Coherent Chief Sustainability Officer. “We are proud to announce these latest accomplishments in conjunction with the celebration of International Mother Earth Day around the world.”

The company powers its European facilities with renewable electricity sources, as does its Fuzhou, China site. Its Wuxi, China plant is on track to use 100 percent renewable electricity by 2025.

Solar installations are either operational or planned for facilities in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam.

The company also is working to eliminate fossil fuel usage at its facilities. Its Zurich facility plans to eliminate fuel oil consumption by 2025. To date, it has reduced its use by approximately half.

Coherent has manufacturing, sales, service, research and development, and distribution facilities worldwide.
